Hampstead Garden Opera

Alcina, April 2005

Handel's Alcina followed Donizetti’s Mary Stuart (“... an evening of magical entertainment performed and sung to the highest professional standards”) with a love story as sensitive and subtle as any post-Freudian drama, as bewitching - and funny - as any midsummer night’s dream. English translation by Amanda Holden.

"... 'tis so fine I have not words to describe it. Whilst Mr Handel was playing his part, I could not help thinking him a necromancer in the midst of his own enchantments."
(Mrs Pendarves to her mother after the first rehearsal, 12 April 1735)
